Taking Your Talent to the Web - a free book from zeldman.com

Rated Five Stars at Amazon.com since the day it was published, “Taking Your Talent to the Web” is now a free downloadable book from zeldman.com:

I wrote this book in 2001 for print designers whose clients want websites, print art directors who’d like to move into full–time web and interaction design, homepage creators who are ready to turn pro, and professionals who seek to deepen their web skills and understanding.

Here we are in 2009, and print designers and art directors are scrambling to move into web and interaction design.

The dot-com crash killed this book. Now it lives again. While browser references and modem speeds may reek of 2001, much of the advice about transitioning to the web still holds true.

It’s yours. Enjoy.

I actually bought this book back in high school. Absolutely loved it as a gateway book from print design to web design.

Here’s a copy of the PDF cropped to size: http://cdharrison.com/media/0735710732_takingTalent_cropped.pdf (Hope it’s okay I did this, Z. If not, I will kill the DL.)

Just thinking, there might be some value in open sourcing this book, and having people update some bits like screenshots, figures, bandwidth numbers, etc… As much as I love the content, it’s very hard to talk to visual people with 10-year old screenshots…

Thanks Jeffrey. You make our lives richer in so many ways. Now my two copies will be worth more!

Jeffrey, without having had Taking Your Talent to the Web’s influence I would not be the web designer, thinker, writer, nor person I am today.

I know folks can say that about a lot of experiences in life, but this book is special. You obviously wrote it for more than a profit. For more than attention. Reading it instilled in me values that continue to make me happy, have changed the way I think and communicate with others, and encourage me to share my energies with others in similarly selfless ways.

Plus, this book helped make possible my current and thriving career as a web designer and thinker. I can’t thank you enough.

[...] When I was a sophomore in college, mired in pencils, paintbrushes, darkroom chemicals, and exacto-knives, there was ONE book that ultimately served to jump start my career in web design. I carried that book in my big red car for an entire semester, highlighting and sticky-noting and referencing it like a sacred text. And now that book is available as a free pdf. [...]

I bought this book in 2003, though strangely enough I didn’t start reading it until yesterday. I must admit I was a bit skeptical about it’s relevance eight years down the road…no more! I’m about 1/3 of the way through and can’t wait to finish it! Thanks so much for making it available to everyone!

@Chris Harrison: Thanks! I’ve moved your cropped PDF to my server, and replaced my PDF with yours. All links in the blog post now point to the cropped version. You are awesome.

@Manuel: A “Taking Your Talent to the Web” WIKI, allowing community members to annotate each page of the book with updated examples, screen shots, etc., would make a nice next step.

Jenny Gray: How kind of you to say.

Thank you for sharing your book. I might sneak some ideas out of it for use with our art director… >;-)
