Report
 (Formerly "New This Week")

Over [counter] served!
31 August 1999
Added a new, invertebrae-sized banner to the collection in Linker's Delight. Refreshed Mr Jenkins's Last Martini and the Guestbook. Jason Kottke has a cool new font for you.

30 August 1999
Redesigned the front page.

29 August 1999
We are taping interviews with George Clooney, Ice Cube, and Mark Wahlberg today, for your viewing pleasure later this week at three-kings.com.

28 August 1999
Refreshed Mr Jenkins's Last Martini, along with the usual pages. Gearing up for Web Design '99 and preparing to launch two new sites.

27 August 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
What does convergence actually mean for those who create and use the Web? Tor Hyams looks for answers in CONVERGE THIS! Plus OUTSIDE READING, our semi-monthly look at great design and content from the world beyond ALA.

26 August 1999
Released A List Apart Digest No. 195. Refreshed the haiku submissions at Mr Jenkins's Last Martini, along with the Guestbook and Gypsies pages.
Our Ad Graveyard was honored by The Web Exhibits Catalogue, a newish directory of worthwhile projects on the olde WWW highway.

25 August 1999
Refer to 23 August. (Basically, we're still hip-deep in a number of large projects. Announcements soon.)

24 August 1999
This feels like a eulogy based on press releases – but it's very sweet.

23 August 1999
Did a quick Web project for our friends at Warner Bros, and another we can't talk about yet. Updated the usual pages here. Look for the launch of a couple of new sites in early September.

22 August 1999
As a birthday gift for our Pops, we redesigned his company's site. (There may still be some bugs in it.)

21 August 1999
You can help the survivors of the earthquake in Turkey by giving a donation through the Adventist Relief Agency or the American Red Cross.

20 August 1999
Our Ad Graveyard is the UK Plus Site of the Day – and will soon be featured in glossy articles from Details and Stuff Magazine. Ah, the splendors of pop culture.
Meanwhile, in this week's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites, new writer Joe Clark takes on the corporate favoritism underlying the Domain Name System. It's one of the strongest articles we've run yet. Enjoy, won't you?

19 August 1999
In its efforts to rewire Manhattan for DSL, Bell South accidentally shut down several smaller Internet companies in the area west of Soho today, including the one that hosts  this site. As a result, zeldman.com was down for most of the day. Sadly, Cool Site of the Day had just pointed hundreds of thousands of newsletter subscribers to our site. They were met with a 404 error, and all we got was this lousy tee shirt.

18 August 1999
We are grateful that our friend Hasan is alive in Istanbul, and our hearts go out to the dead and injured and their families.

17 August 1999
We're in a design crunch on some new projects. More will be revealed. (Isn't it always?)

16 August 1999
Updated our Ask Dr Web tutorial, along with the usual pages. (You know which they are by now. Oh, yes you do.)
Speaking of the good doctor, he's been added to the database at internet-help.net. Visitors are empowered to rate listed sites on a scale from 1 to 10. We gave ourselves a 10. Moo-ha! ha! We are evil.

15 August 1999
Returned from a short beach trip and ran smack dab into an Indian parade down the streets of NYC. Sweet.
The The Web Standards Project's new Standards Now! initiative is generating much support, along with occasional bursts of the old misunderstanding that our group is pro-Netscape or anti-Microsoft.
For the record, the WaSP does not hate Microsoft or any other corporate entity; we simply want all companies who make web browsers to deliver full support of key web standards. The petition is not intended as a reprimand or put-down, but simply as a means to show the company that consumers do care about the issue.

14 August 1999
Released A List Apart Digest 1.94.

13 August 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
HAVE LAPTOP, WILL TRAVEL: There are enough headaches associated with building successful Web sites to make anyone's life complete. Building that site while traveling can seem impossible. Fasten your seat belts as Julia Hayden shares tricks and tips to actually make it work. Plus: OUTSIDE READING #10 – Good things to read and view when you finish this week's ALA_ Magazine. This week: a bumper crop of beautifully-designed sites, plus news on the Web standards front.

12 August 1999
Many of this site's Ad Graveyard fans have asked about the secret Dutch commercial. It's available from this hidden location. Warnings: it's a dialup modem buster at over 8 MB, and although it ran on Dutch TV, it would be rated "R" for impolite language if rated in this country. Not for everyone.
Released A List Apart Digest 1.93. Refreshed the martini of Mr Jenkins. A few of the early letters submitted to The Web Standards Project's new Standards Now! initiative bounced, due to a D.N.S. error. The problem has been fixed, though it may take a while for the change to percolate through the network. Bounced letters will be resubmitted automatically (no need to sign and send again). Thanks for supporting standards on the Web.

11 August 1999
The Web Standards Project announces Standards Now!, a drive for full support of W3 standards in the next generation of Web browsers. (We need your help, so come and sign the letter.)
As part of Standards Now!, the WaSP initiated a letter-writing campaign, and issued two press releases. Getitright.txt explains the letter-writing campaign, while petition.txt tells of 1,000 designers and developers for Fortune 500 companies, who signed the petition at Web Design '99 in Atlanta and Web Design World '99 in Seattle.

10 August 1999
Refreshed Letter of the Month and Mr Jenkins's Last Martini. Prepared next week's issue of A List Apart. Watch this space for an important new initiative from The Web Standards Project, coming in the next day or two.

9 August 1999
Updated the News and Mission sections of The Web Standards Project, including a new Romanian translation courtesy of Jordi Muresan. The Project's plea for sanity on the Web has now been translated into fifteen languages, from Big Five Chinese to Turkish.

8 August 1999
Refreshed the usual pages, from Mr Jenkins to the Guestbook and Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves. Edited the little Emzee site and will soon post a redesign. Two swell new sites are also on their way.

7 August 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
ACCOUNTING FOR SUCCESS: Your Web firm or freelance gig may be ultra-cool, but it's still a business, and should be run like one. Scott Kramer returns with tools to turn your long hours into cold cash. Don't let the word "ACCOUNTING" turn you off; this well-written, informative piece should be required reading for anyone who hopes to make a living in the industry. Now online in ALA.

6 August 1999
This site and others get hyped out of all proportion in the swell new  Fierce.com, the Exclusive Book for Web Elitists. You can buy the book online in Fierce's store.

5 August 1999
Released A List Apart Digest 1.91. Refreshed la martini de Monsieur Jenkins.

Freshened up the Awards page.

2 August 1999
Refreshed The Ad Graveyard, our mausoleum of real ads that died young.

1 August 1999
It's the first of the month; your rent is probably due. Updated the Resources section of The Web Standards Project, and added a Buggin' Out report to this week's issue of A List Apart. Refreshed this site's Guestbook. Phase 1 of Joe Jenett's Daily Web Thing is up. We like it, but then, we would.

30 July 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
WORLD WHITE WEB: We call the Web the world's most democratic medium, but is it the truth, or a marketing shpiel? Wayne Bremser explores the hype and the hope.

27 July 1999
Updated good old Mr Jenkins's Last Martini, and refreshed the Guestbook. We're about a week away from launching a swell new site.

26 July 1999
Released A List Apart Digest No. 189.

24 July 1999
One unclosed </B> tag wreaked havoc with last night's A List Apart, as several hundred readers were kind enough to point out. And another tasteless outdoor banner found its way into our Ad Graveyard.

23 July 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
EXECUTION vs. CONCEPT – For the sake of one more drop-shadow, a kingdom was lost. Your humble Web author peruses the pitfalls of putting technique before communication. Plus: OUTSIDE READING 9 – Sweet sites and cool content.

22 July 1999
Brian released A List Apart Digest 188, a special issue devoted to Web ennui. Poured another round for Mr Jenkins and updated various low-level pages here.

21 July 1999
Pardon the lack of news here today. We're now redesigning three sites....

20 July 1999
The Web Standards Project issued a statement in support of Web Accessibility – and various other bits of the site received subtle tinkering only a mother could love.

19 July 1999
Still digging on those two extracurricular sites. (More will be revealed.) Released A List Apart Digest 187. Refreshed the Guestbook, the Exit Gallery links, and Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves (a directory of sites that use our free graphics).

18 July 1999
We're back from the beach, but two huge Web projects are kicking sand in our face. Meanwhile, if you wish, you can read our foolhardy statements about The Future of The Web in this month's High Five.

11 July 1999
Where are we? We're toiling at two Web design projects, then skipping off for a week at the beach before starting a new job. We still really, really love you, and we'll be back soon with more fun just for you.

9 July 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
ENTERTAINMENT ON THE WEB, by Brandon Oeilling. Entertainment Web sites are fun to view and a blast to create – when you know all the angles. Brandon Oelling shares secrets that can help you succeed.  Plus: ALA Top 20, and Looking Back.

8 July 1999
We're the keynote speaker for Thunder Lizard's Web Design Denver '99, September 29 - October 1. Pretty darned nifty. Released A List Apart Digest 186. Poured a few more for Mr Jenkins.

7 July 1999
Updated the Sites section of the About Department. (Was that in English?)

6 July 1999
Shucks! Zeldman.com won Ask Jeeves' new Silver Platter Award, honoring sites that provide genuine content while respecting bandwidth. Duly noted on the Awards page.
Refreshed the Ad Graveyard. Released A List Apart Digest 185. Refreshed the Guestbook. Poured another round for Mr Jenkins. (Mr Jenkins's Last Martini has now outlasted the ad campaign it spoofed.) Updated Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, along with a few of the messy old Web Tools links in the Exit Gallery.
(Warning: many parts of the Exit Gallery are quite old. While most links work, these areas of the site could use a re-design, and the kludgy, circa-1996 code is appalling. Between ALA and new client projects, we may never get around to truly revising this section of the site; but if you follow ALA, you're in good shape anyway.)

2 - 5 July 1999
In Friday's issue of A List Apart, the weekly online magazine for people who make Web sites...
WORK FOR HIRE: "What do you charge for a Web site?" It's a common question, and a loaded one. Scott Kramer helps you dodge the bullets, price your work fairly, and get paid. Plus OUTSIDE READING 8: Design, code, and content from the world beyond A List Apart.
::: We'll be taking a short break to celebrate the American holiday in the traditional manner: reading books on the beach. See you on 5 July or shortly thereafter. If you're looking for something to do meanwhile, don't forget that Icon Jam takes place this Sunday, 4 July.

1 July 1999
Zeldman.com welcomes its 3,000,000th visitor. Thanks, y'all!

3 June 1999
There are "ghost stations" on the New York subway system – stations no longer in use by the public, yet never sealed up or shut off. You pass through them on your way from one living destination to another. We are reminded of this archeological experience because today we dug up this craggy page from the earliest days of this site's existence. Aside from an occasional extension of its copyright, the page has not been updated since at least '96. It feels a hundred years old. Still online here, for no reason we can possibly imagine, except that Jakob says you should never kill a link.

2 June 1999
Refreshed good old Mr Jenkins's Last Martini along with the usual pages.
