Ten years ago tonight

Ten years ago, my girlfriend flew home to celebrate new year’s eve in San Francisco, but I had to stay in New York to work, so we spent the turn of the millennium apart.
A friend of a friend threw a party. I attended, grumpily, as shown here.
Ten years ago, but it may as well have been a thousand. Everything is different now. Everything except that I am once again separated from those with whom I would most wish to mark the falling away of old things and the luminous beauty of new beginnings.

Happy New Year. Here’s to the future.
New Year’s is overrated. Regardless, try to have a good one.
Speaking of new beginnings, I still owe you an email or two. Thanks for the reminder. ;-)
Happy new year, chief.

God-DAMN you can write son! Is it wrong to wish I could beautify my pain thus?
<3
Hey I’m here with you… kind of. At home, momentarily at the computer.
Take care. Here’s to a prosperous and healthy 2010!

Wow, that last sentence blew my mind. Cheers to another decade full of unpredictable changes!
are you holding a pistol? I guess you really didn’t want to party.
Feeling the pain of separation sitting here, at home, while my daughter and her mother are up in Northern Michigan for the New Year. Looking forward to better, well just better in 2010 for everyone. Who knows, maybe with the new year, it will bring us all the luminous beauty of new beginnings after the falling away of old things…Here’s to 2010 and the new decade of optimism…Peace!
Happy New Year, Jeffrey. Thanks for sharing and for just being yourself.
Sending all my love and xxx’s. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Jeffrey! I hope you’re not quite as grumpy this time around as you were ten years ago! That’s some serious grump you have going on in the image!
I know how you feel. My older kids are too-damn-far away and I wish they were all here with us for the holiday… and the grandkids. It sucks dirt…
Here’s to a better year!

I hope you will have a great 2010. Thanks for all your great writings of 2009.
(now your haircut is much better)
What’s up with the gun, partner?
It’s been that kind of year for me too: Loss and loneliness during those times I most want to share in order to either amplify the joy or blunt the sadness. If 2010 is a new page, let’s turn it over and start living it. Peace and happiness to you Jeffrey.
wishes 2010 would bring Mr. Zeldman to my Web Standards Project class as a guest speaker… merry new year… thanks for the inspiration always.
Then, as now, it still looks as if you have a pretty good grip on things :)
Sometimes pain prepares us for pleasures we could never imagine. Keep the faith and Happiest of all the New Years to us all.
You don’t know me, but I know you a little, and I’d like to give you a hug.
I’m a hugger; nevermind if you’re not.
I’m a man. I’m not gay. And I would like to give you a hug as well.
I can see, between the lines, that your separation from your partner has been/is a hard stone to carry. The grief can be immense; a hole that w0n’t be filled by books, advice, distraction. But rest assured, this too will pass. You will feel joy again.
As someone said to a woman friend,”It took me 10 years to get over my last marriage – you want me to do that again? Forget it!”.
There is life after relationship.
Now that was a nasty photograph Jeffrey – did you happen to shoot that photographer at the after-party party? :)
All the best for 2010… good luck with it.
Glad to see I’m not the only badass in this business.
Gangsta . . . !
Thank you for allowing us kids to comment on this. All the best from Frank.

Ah, this photo is the bad *ss I met long ago in Denver.
I have a bit of guilt for the introduction (meant for business only but hoping the ends (ava) cancel out the means!) I must say this, you are far more real, accessible, lovable now then this guy with the shot gun was!
Thank you Jeffrey for the generous sharing, encourement and help you give non-stop all year.
I too was alone (sigh) on New Years (thinking I’d paint) and Chanukah… not what I expected this phase of life to be like!
May your 2010 reap some of the richness, caring, laughter and fun you’ve been sowing for decades! You desereve wonderful :)
