The book is a good introduction for anyone who want to know how to build websites according to Web Standars. Despite some clues are a little old, it should be good a new updated version of the book including latest browsers like Internet Explorer 8. Anyway the book is nice and usefull to a new developer or designer.

So by 'external CSS file' you mean external like 'hosted on the font server' external, right? That seems pretty failsafe. Seems like something Typekit et al. could arrange pretty easily.

Given that IE doesn't load the content until the font downloads, imagine what would happen if the font server went down, even momentarily.

One workaround might be to reference the @font-face in an external CSS file.
