For me, orange is synonymous with Zeldman. Glad it's back.

I love the boldness of your redesign. I think it links back to the first version of alistapart.com in a way (or at least the first version that I saw - with the orange background and all) and still it's new and fresh. Nice contrasts which I think is easier to look at than the creamy version you have now. This is the kind of design I think you're brilliant at, but that I haven't seen you do in a long time – if you don't mind me saying so. Makes me smile. Cheers :-)

I second Mr Eisenberg on the "bold dark orange on black" links down in the footer. It's a bit of a strain to read. I like the orange theme though, and not only because it harks back to the good old days.

Oh, the wannabe editor in me is asking why the ISSN has a period but not the "Made in New York City", and I'd also like "Previous Reports" not to be a button - not least because in the past I've pressed it instead of submitting a comment.

Blew air into footer with about two minutes’ CSS tinkering. Looks way better.

Yup, already way more inviting to read. Now that the graphic header you had off to the left is gone, I don't even miss it. Woo!

I’m in favor of the orange. I like the idea of using bold color in a web publication because you can. I think the only reason it rubs some people the wrong way is because it defies convention in the print world, because printing color costs money. Though maybe there’s something else I’m not getting.

Strong color pleases some people and rubs others the wrong way. This is always the case when you work with strong color.

Also, what's beautiful in one OS on one monitor at one gamma setting can be painful to look at in a different OS, monitor, and gamma setting. Most computer users don't color-calibrate their monitors, etc.

I always used color in web design. Most of us did in the early days.

The Apple-influenced "web 2.0" style that began gaining influence in the early 2000s did away with rich background colors. That style still looks very good.

But style is fashion.

This redesign hearkens to a much earlier version of the site; it's a brand restoration, if you will.

People unfamiliar with the old brand (or those who are familiar but never liked it) may not like where this is going. I may build in a style switcher to give them a more neutral background if they prefer.

Refresh.

If using Safari, option-refresh like a million times (or empty cache, then option-refresh).

Like the added margins on the masthead. I think "Web design news and information..." needs to come up a pixel to align with the bottom of "zeldman.com."

@Jason Santa Maria:

Yeah, the footer feels crowded. I was hoping my sense of its crowdedness would go away with time. Good feedback as always, sir. Thanks.
