Last year,
I bought my very first laptop.
Started building a house for my mom and my siblings.
I got a promotion and received a salary increase which also means I did well at work.
Unfortunately, zero lovelife.

For this year, I hope to finish the house for my parents. After which, I’ll start putting up a small offline business.

What a collection of literary responses to the age-old question of “what do you have to show for yourself this year?” Who says that the internet age has stunted our abilities to write? I have to say, though, that this is an excellent tradition, and sort of turns the tables on the typical “resolutions.” Resolutions always seem to me like an admission of defeat in some way – “let’s see what I didn’t manage to succeed with this past year and what I can do to change this rotten person that I’ve allowed myself to become.” For myself, I can happily report that I too got married, earned my Ph.D., had two articles published in scholarly journals, and still managed to keep up with everything worth watching on television. Perhaps not the success everyone hopes and dreams of, but it suits me nicely. With apologies for my decided lack of rhythm and rhyme.

Well we had a busy year.

I got married to Jennie.

We purchased our first house together.

The cat died.

Then found Jennie was going to have twins.

Boy, me thinks I need more design jobs.

Ahhhh now I see why I liked the new dictionary.com so much. I remember thinking "woah, they hired someone good". It's just a pity that it still comes as a surprise when big sites relaunch with standards.

I learned a bit about website design and accessibility from Mike Cherim. I created a few websites and made a bit of money off my web obsession. I retired from my 28 year police career and couldn't be happier that I did so.

It pales in comparison, but for me this amounted to a busy year!

New job, new possibilities, new opportunities.
Read Zeldman, expanded horizons, teaching myself CSS. See above.

To the future (with the utmost respect and knowledge of the past...)

Hmm. I developed the codebase for one of the biggest IT projects in Australia.

Finally re-entered the online publishing arena, albeit haphazardly.

Then I went to Spain in the hope of milking said role for all it was worth. Got offered a job, had it taken back off me, and came back home.

Became an uncle (again), and am about to lose an uncle.

I'm hoping 2007 gets me to South America.

Hmmm, I thought you were mostly a web designer, but your review makes it look like you only had two gigs in 2006. Am I misinterpreting?

Happy Cog did a number of design jobs in 2006. I listed five of them: ma.gnolia, dictionary.com, Ad Age, AIGA, and Comhaltas. The first three have gone live; the two others are in progress.
